Vaali in Konkani is a kind of spinach. Though the authentic version of this dish is made using vaali, we used the regular spinach instead. If you are a vegetarian or don't want to add the shrimps it's okay as the dish comes out great even then.
Ingredients
1/2 lb Spinach
1/2 cup Dry Shrimps
1 cup Toor Daal
1 cup grated Coconut
3/4 cup chopped Onion
6-8 roasted dry Red chillies
1 tsp tamarind paste
1 tsp turmeric powder
Oil
Salt
Serves - 4
Method
Boil spinach along with toor daal and 3 cups of water.
Grind grated coconut, tamarind paste and red chillies to a fine paste and keep aside.
In a pan take 2-3 tsp of oil and saute the shrimp with turmeric for about 10 mins (Dried shrimps should be cleaned properly than the regular one, before use)
To the boiled daal add the ground mixture and sauted shrimps and bring it to a boil. Add salt to taste (Note: Dried shrimps already have salt usually.)
While that's getting done, saute the chopped onions in a pan till golden brown. Once done, add it to the above mixture.
Cook for 5 mins and the dish is ready to be served.
